GUV PATTERSON:
DON’T BE A FOSSIL FOOL
NIX BROADWATER

Manorville, NY…Peter Maniscalco, long-time Long Island environmental activist and Dowling College adjunct professor of Environmental Ethics, called today - April Fool’s Day - on Governor David Patterson to avoid being a “fossil fool” by giving the “thumbs down” to the Broadwater LNG proposal.

Peter Maniscalco says: “Greenpeace recent studies conclude that LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) is almost as filthy as burning coal, when you take into account the entire LNG “fuel-cycle”.  Fossil-fuels are used to supply energy for all LNG processes: extraction, compression (natural gas must be compressed 600%), refrigeration (minus 260 F), storage, transportation across the ocean (LNG comes from Africa, Asia, Middle East, etc.), storage in terminals like Broadwater, and turning LNG back into a gaseous state for local delivery.  Totaling the CO2 global warming gas pollution from the fossil-fuels burned during these LNG processes rivals the amount of global warming pollutants produced from burning coal.”

Maniscalco continues:  “Broadwater’s parent –the Shell Oil Company – deceived New York City representatives and environmental organizations who are advocating for Broadwater’s LNG as a “clean fuel”.  Broadwater is aimed primarily at providing natural gas to NY City.  But natural gas and LNG are vastly different.  LNG is a filthy fuel.  Shell apparently did not explain LNG’s total pollution and the fact that LNG global warming gas (CO2) pollution rivals that of burning coal.”

In conclusion, Peter Maniscalco remarks: “Hopefully, Governor Patterson will not be “fossil–fooled” by the Shell Oil Company.  Broadwater is an environmental scam and the Governor should “deep-six” it.”
